Newark: 2022 Elections

In the run-up to the 2022 municipal elections, we are looking at voter turnout and "getting the vote out" efforts in Newark. Check here for our latest reporting on the candidates and issues that play a role as voters prepare to elect the city's next mayor and all nine seats on the city council on May 10, 2022.

Who’s on the ballot?

Here's a list of certified candidates from the city clerk's office:

Voter Turnout

To get a sense of how voters have turned out in recent elections, we charted the number of registered voters in the city compared to those who actually showed up to the polls between 2014 and 2021.

An average of 43,000 Newark voters showed cast ballots during elections held in the last seven years. That's 28 percent of the city's electorate.

And, taking a closer look at municipal elections, turnout is—not unexpectedly— less than half that of presidential election years.

In 2018, when Newark last held citywide races, 39.8 percent of registered voters participated, up from 20 percent in the preceding elections of 2014. As we continue our coverage, we'll look to see whether the turnout will reflect the efforts of voting rights advocacy in Newark.
