In lieu of flowers

In lieu of flowers,

shout down the anonymous cowards,

and those who speak without knowing.

In lieu of flowers,

just drop my body on the steps of the F.D.A.

In lieu of flowers,

Let it be a story

In lieu of flowers,

don’t just vote, boo too.

Vote then fight,

fight those you just voted for,

fight for those who aren’t in the room.

Never concede.

They just closed your eyes.

No need for any shroud.

You were already in your swaddle blanket.

In lieu of flowers,

help replace the swaddle blanket we buried you in.

In lieu of flowers,

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

In lieu of flowers,

actually fight for something,

show up for each other.

In lieu of flowers,

give politicians ultimatums,

donate to the folks actually doing the work,

stop playing not to lose.

…trucks and trucks of formula we send to you are parked outside the border.

While you watch your baby starve to death.

In lieu of flowers,

end the genocide.

In lieu of flowers,

teach your children to count:

one life

one life

one life

one life

one life

because each time

is the first time

that that life

has been taken.

In lieu of flowers,

point to the graves

and witness it

In lieu of flowers:

Do the work.

Continue the fight.

Attend the protest.

Believe women.

Fire the racist cops.

Hold power accountable.

Share the words.

Write the stories.
